New Kid on the block: Babla

The cutthroat competition by Hindi and western music has failed to push Assamese music to the background. Though the young masses today prefer to sway to the zazzy and foot romping jingles of pop numbers yet Assamese music has survived and held its ground. Every day a star is born here and such a rising star is new entrant Babla Hazarika.

Present/Past ARBian (3rd mess) meet at Cotton College

As a part of the management committee, I cordially invite all ex-ARBians to be present in this congregation which is expected to be populated by all well-known ARBians and Cottians of past/present. We are expecting a lot of fun, cultural programmes and of course nostalgia. It will an oppurtunity to meet our old buddies and those big names who were ARBians and whom we always wanted to meet. The meet is scheduled for 20th May.

Rongaali Bihu Celebrated in Dubai


The program was also attended by a few guests from Oman and Assam. While Sri Hiren Sarma with his wife Smt Usha Sarma came from Oman, renowned Assamese singer, Sri Pankaj Dutta, along with his team members Sri Pradip Pathak and Sri Mehboob Laskar, came all the way from Assam to participate in this program.

The main feature of the Bihu celebrations was a cultural function held on the evening of 25th April, where local talents as well as artistes from Assam participated.

Rongali Bihu in Hyderabad


The Assamese community in Hyderabad too celebrated Rongali Bihu with great fervour, complete with traditional games, cultural programme, Bihu dance and feast. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Dr Aroop Jyoti Kalita, Bimal Bhattacharyya, Manoj Mahanta, Sukumar Goswami, Sushanta Sharma, Srabana Lahiri, Amirul Sheik, Jyotirmoy Dutta, Gitali Thakur, Chandrashekhar Barua, Prabalika Borah, Nilotpal Sharma and Co., almost 200 Assamese from all parts of Andhra Pradesh got together for the first time in Hyderabad to participate in the Bihu celebrations.

The participation of some of the local people added more colour to the celebration.

The president of the 'Axomiya Xomaj' of IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Khanindra Pathak, in his address said, “Though we are far away from our home-land, our heart flies to Assam whenever we hear the sounds of 'dhol-chapori'”.
