A discussion was held to deliberate upon the issue of peace-process between the Government of India and United Liberation Front of Assam at the residence of eminent writer Mamoni Roisom Goswami at Gandhi Basti, Guwahati on 22nd September, 2009. Along with Dr. Goswami, co-ordinator PCG, it was participated by Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, co-ordinator, Peace and Conflict Studies, Gauhati University, Dilip Patgiri, member of PCG and Mr. Niseswar Saikia, President, All Assam Matak Yuva Chatra Sanmilan. The discussion was moderated by Lachit Bordoloi, Chief Advisor, MASS.
The discussion dwelled upon the various aspects of the peace process – how it was initiated, the reasons behind its discontinuation, the vested interest groups which wanted to thwart it and the future possibilities of resumption. It also discussed the public opinion in favour of a peaceful settlement of three decades of armed conflict. The discussion was sponsored by Panos South Asia, Northeast Regional Office.
