Massive felling of trees by the two companies — L&T and Suma — engaged by the NHPC in the project has drawn flak from the people of Dhemaji district.

In spite of the order of the Deputy Commissioner of Dhemaji district against tree-felling, the NHPC has shown no sign to stop such illegal activities, people here alleged. It may be noted here that the Supreme Court had put a ban on tree felling in the region.

one UPDF member arrested

He was tortured badly and had to be treated in Khagrachari hospital under police custody. At present he is being detained in Khagrachari jail.

It is not known whether any case has been filed against him.

Earlier, in 2003 Mr. Barua was hurt when armed members of the Jana Samhati Samiti mounted an armed attack on UPDF office at Babuchara. Another UPDF member Gyaneshwar Chakma was killed in that attack.

The proscribed ULFA today named a ten-member people’s consultative group headed by literatteur Mamoni Raisom Goswami to enter into a dialogue with the Centre to carry forward the peace talks between it and New Delhi.

TERI regional office being set up in city(The Assam Tribune, 20/09/05)

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited the TERI-NE building recently and he was apprised of the progress made in construction of the building and the TERI-NE activities through multimedia presentation. Civil Engg. Dept, Assam Engineering College. get-together on 28 sept 2005

A very highlighted program is expected as this will be th 50th times the deptt will be holding its get-together. The deptt was inuagurated in the year 1954 in the college, which was in fact known as Assam Civil Engineering College. which is also celebrating its golden jubilee celebration for the whole year long.

Assam Bihu team leaves for Russia(The Sentinel,26/09/2005)

Under the leadership of artiste Banshi Kaul, the team has been selected as a member of the Indian cultural team which will perform classical and folk cultural programmes of 16 Indian States in several cities of Russia, including Moscow. The team has left for Russia from New Delhi yesterday. Prominent personalities of Indian classical music namely Ustad Amzad Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Saurachia and dancer Bharati Shivaji of Kerala will also perform on behalf of the Indian team.

Nitin was a year 2000 graduate of Klein Forest High School. After high school, Nitin went to study in New Zealand for 2 years. However, in his strong determination to serve the country, Nitin decided to join the US Marines and continue with his studies in the US.
