Assamese get-together

Hi Everybody:

We just got home from the great Assamese get-together at Orlando, Florida held at the beautiful and elegant setting at Disney Coronado Springs resort, which we enjoyed thoroughly.

Here are some of the highlights of the event (from my point of view as a member of the audience):

There was no small-time politics and upstaging one another at all. Thus there was no tension and each and everyone was having plain and simple fun. It was truly a "community event" where the community was the focus, as opposed to a convention which is consumed by itself.

Supreme Court strikes down IMDT Act

The apex court directed that all tribunals functioning under the IMDT, which has been declared unconstitutional, would seize functioning with immediate effect.

The court, allowing the petition filed by AGP leader Sarbanand Sonawal, said all pending matters before the IMDT Tribunal would stand transfer to tribunals under the Foreigners Act.

Taking note of the huge influx of Bangladesh migrants into Assam, the court directed the state government to constitute sufficient number of tribunals under the Foreigners Act to deal with the situation effectively.

Assam Right to Information Act

How does the Right to Information (RTI) Act help us?

RTI Act gives you the right to ask the Government for information that can expose inaction and corruption, and address your grievances.

Under the RTI Act you can:

  • Demand from the government information pertaining to any of its departments.
  • Demand photocopies of government contracts, payment, estimates, measurements of engineering works etc.
  • Demand from the government samples of material used in the construction of roads, drains, buildings etc.

10 POWERFUL ASSAMESE YOUTH

-------------

Here is a good news for the ‘corruption-eaten’, ‘strife-stricken’ society of the State. Forty one per cent of the 1,419 youths interviewed in a recent survey, find it loathsome to bribe someone for securing a job. But there is another information, which has the potential of causing consternation. That is 57 per cent of these youths are of the view that they are heading only towards an ominous future. Providence has nothing but only the terrible things stored for the State, they believe.
