Rebel filmmaker creates controversy with Naga film

GUWAHATI: Shooting a sixteen year old, gun-wielding soldier of the 'Naga army', rebel filmmaker Shankar Borua admits having experienced "strange explicable feelings."

Assam 2002, held on 5th and 6th of July in Boulder, Colorado was a grand success. We had about 300 attendees from across the nation and abroad. The cultural programs were of superb quality; the food was superior; the meetings were cordial, informative and productive. We would like to thank the guest artist Dr. Anima Chowdhury, the chief guest Dr. Mamoni Roysom Goswami, all the enthusiastic participants and attendees.

Nabakanta Barua passes away
The state's most loved and respected poet died at his Silpukhuri residence at around 12.30 pm today following some respiratory problems. Born in Nagaon, Nabakanta Barua's single greatest contribution to the states was his poems, considered the most modern and contemporary in his times which paved the way for modern poetry in the state. Nabakanta Barua along with Amulya Barua and Hem Barua were considered the renaissance of modern poetry in the state. Barua's part in other litterateur such as novels and short stories besides poetry were also significant and most contemporary of its times.

There is no end to the clandestine scheme of the colonialist government of India to wipe out the indigenous peoples. The recent eviction drive carried out by the puppet government in Dispur all over areas inhabited by indigenous people, including Guwahati, is another example of the oppressive colonialist government design to turn the sons of the soil virtually to landless nomads.

Runima Kakoty
Artistic and theatrical worlds came face to face when Barnsley artist Runima Kakoty met James Bond at the celebrity studded Golden jubilee event at the Naval and Military Club, St James's, London.
Runima sold several of the 14 works she exhibitted to raise hundreds of pounds for UNICEF.
"I visited Rajasthan earlier this year and painted a number of paintings of Rajasthani palaces and scenes.I offered some of these paintings and was delighted that they were accepted. It was a star studded event but meeting Pierce Brosnan was wonderful!"
Keshav Changkakoty Day
The supreme of Tal-tarang Smt. Sarat Kumari declared that the forth coming festival will be held on 2nd February 2003. The matter related to the Hindustani Percussion instrument Tabla and the Vaishnavite Percussion Instrument Khol will be discussed in this conference. The demonstration as well as the musical night also will be celebrated in this Anniversary.

Assamese Poet Honoured
At a glittering ceremony at held on 26th July,2002 at Rabindra Bharati auditorium in Hyderabad, the award was presented to him by Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Dr. C. Rangarajan.
This award has been instituted by Joshua Foundation in memory of eminent Telegu poet & Padma Bhusan recipient Gurram Joshua .
Shri Phukan is the 7th receipient of this prestigious award given annually given to outstanding poets in the country whose works give expression to progressive ideas, humanism and humanitarian values.
