Assam - the land where you find flowers that are exquisitely beautiful, animals that are rare, and a beleagured people that are proud and inviting. It is the land of the mighty river Brahmaputra (the Luit) and the one-horned rhinoceros.
Bihu is the national festival of Assam. The principal of the three Bihus, Bohag or Rongali Bihu ushers in the Assamese New Year, in the middle of April, and is celebrated with distinctive Bihu dances and songs.
In this Web site, you will find information on all aspects of Assam. You will also find conversations and discussions on many and varied issues that Assam faces in the form of bulletin boards, forums and mailing lists.

| Boulder, CO, based Global Response has stated a campaign for better environmental management of Deepor Beel wetland, the only Ransar site in Assam located in Guwahati. Please ask people visit http://www.globalresponse.org and write letters to the Prime Minister of India and Chief Minister of Assam (instructions and draft letter available on Global Response website under "Current Campaign"). The campaign is the result of a student project done at North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND). More information on Deepor Beel is available at http://www.ndsu.edu/ndsuem and at http://www.aaranyak.org. It is worth noting that World Wetland Day is on February 2 and this year's theme is: Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People - Very much in line with the Deepor Beel Campaign. |

| MAJULI- the world’s largest river island is facing the heavy erosion by the mighty Brahmaputra. Originally the total area of this island was 1250 sq. km. After the great earthquake in 1950 the erosion was started. And for this heavy problem the area of this island reduced to 480 sq. km. This means within 57 years it has lost 770 sq km. So it is very obvious that what will happen after fifty years from now. |

Well if you look towards the East in the Indian map, the place lies behind Bangladesh, connected to mainland India by a small gap called "Chickens Neck" near Siliguri-Darjeeling section. The airport serving this particular region is Bagdogra, which also is a defence airbase. |
